{"id":8135,"date":"2023-07-16T16:57:12","date_gmt":"2023-07-16T06:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/footcheck.yourfootpain.co.uk\/?post_type=fact-sheets&#038;p=8135"},"modified":"2023-07-16T16:57:15","modified_gmt":"2023-07-16T06:57:15","slug":"ingrowing-toenail","status":"publish","type":"fact-sheets","link":"https:\/\/footcheck.yourfootpain.co.uk\/fact-sheets\/ingrowing-toenail\/","title":{"rendered":"Ingrowing Toenail"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Ingrowing toenails occur when the hard nail plate causes a wound in the soft flesh around the nail.<br>They can be very painful and become infected.<br>There may be an overgrowth of tissue around the nail due to irritation of the wound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How did I get this?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Direct trauma from tight footwear or stubbing your toe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long term pressure from a thickened or curved toenail<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor nail cutting leaving a sharp corner on the nail<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swollen toes and sweaty feet can weaken the skin around the nail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can I do about it?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid footwear which presses on the toe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bathe the foot in salt water and apply an antiseptic dressing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trim the toenail as short as possible but do not cut into the painful side<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What help can I get for this?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>A podiatrist can remove the part of the nail that is causing the problem. This may be done under local anaesthetic if necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Podiatrist can advise on appropriate footwear and how to avoid further problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A doctor may prescribe antibiotics if the toe is infected, however the nail will still need treatment to prevent further infection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Podiatrist can permanently remove the problem piece of nail and prevent regrowth.
